These projects were awarded $33.3 million of the total $151 million announced.<\/p>\n<p>Awards were made to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MIT<\/li>\n<li>FastCAP Systems<\/li>\n<li>Agrivida<\/li>\n<li>I366 Technologies<\/li>\n<li>FloDesign Wind Turbine<\/li>\n<li>Sun Catalytix<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The areas of research for these grants are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Energy storage\n<ul>\n<li>MIT (grid-scale battery technology)<\/li>\n<li>FastCap Systems (ultracapacitors)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Biomass energy\n<ul>\n<li>Agrivida (cell-wall degrading enzymes to improve cellulosic feedstocks)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Renewable energy\n<ul>\n<li>I366 Technologies (next generation silicon wafers for PV)<\/li>\n<li>FloDesign Wind Turbine (shrouded wind turbine design for higher efficiency power generation)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Direct Solar Fuels\n<ul>\n<li>Sun Catalytix (new technology for splitting water into hydrogen &amp; oxygen as a storage mechanism for energy generated from intermittent sources)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>6 of the 37 projects awarded funding in the first round of ARPA-E grants on October 26, 2009 were led by Massachusetts companies or institutions.
