{"id":67,"date":"2010-02-03T10:50:14","date_gmt":"2010-02-03T14:50:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.riverbendadvisors.com\/blog\/?p=67"},"modified":"2010-04-05T11:55:48","modified_gmt":"2010-04-05T15:55:48","slug":"leading-by-example","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.riverbendadvisors.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/leading-by-example\/","title":{"rendered":"Leading by example"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While the challenges of passing comprehensive energy and climate change legislation gets most of the attention and generates even more of the national agita, the simple and effective practice of leading by example gets far too little.\u00a0 Case in point &#8211; <a href=\"..\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Executive-Order-on-Sustainability-10-5-09.pdf\"> President Obama&#8217;s Executive Order of October 5, 2009<\/a> directing the government to create an integrated sustainability strategy and make significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The document itself &#8211; especially the policy and goals sections (pp. 1-5) &#8211; provides an effective blueprint for any large organization, governmental or private.\u00a0\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what it says:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Goal:<\/span> a <strong>clean energy economy<\/strong> which will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>increase our Nation&#8217;s prosperity<\/li>\n<li>promote energy security<\/li>\n<li>protect the interests of taxpayers<\/li>\n<li>safeguard the health of our environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Means:<\/span> the Federal Government, the largest user of resources, <strong>must lead by example<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Policy:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>increase energy efficiency<\/li>\n<li>measure, report, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions<\/li>\n<li>conserve and protect water resources through efficiency, reuse, and storm water management<\/li>\n<li>eliminate waste, recycle, and prevent pollution<\/li>\n<li>use the government&#8217;s buying power to foster markets for sustainable technologies and materials<\/li>\n<li>design, construct, maintain, and operate high performance sustainable buildings in sustainable locations<\/li>\n<li>engage employees in achieving these goals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Goals Section<\/span> lays out these areas of focus and includes some specific targets:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reduce energy intensity in federal buildings<\/li>\n<li>use more renewable power<\/li>\n<li>reduce fossil fuel use<\/li>\n<li>work differently &#8211;
