{"id":84,"date":"2010-02-08T20:11:03","date_gmt":"2010-02-09T00:11:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.riverbendadvisors.com\/blog\/?p=84"},"modified":"2012-08-14T15:03:46","modified_gmt":"2012-08-14T20:03:46","slug":"energy-star-rebates-coming-and-going-soon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.riverbendadvisors.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/energy-star-rebates-coming-and-going-soon\/","title":{"rendered":"Energy Star Rebates &#8211; coming (and going?) soon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new round of Energy Star rebates to encourage consumers is coming soon &#8211; but these are funded by the stimulus program for this year,\u00a0 so they will probably not last long.<\/p>\n<p>$300 million is being made available to the states along population lines, with the focus on larger energy-using appliances.\u00a0 Each state was allowed to develop its own program, selecting the appliances and the process for the rebates.<\/p>\n<p>Massachusetts will have <strong>$6.235 million<\/strong> to spend on consumer rebates.\u00a0\u00a0 The Massachusetts program will provide rebates for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Refrigerators<\/li>\n<li>Freezers<\/li>\n<li>Clothes washers<\/li>\n<li>Dishwashers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Retailers will be required to recycle <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">refrigerators <\/span>and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">freezers<\/span> and provide proof of recycling for consumers to collect the rebate.\u00a0 This will ensure that the rebate program doesn&#8217;t unintentionally drive up energy use by consumers&#8217; keeping their old refrigerators and freezers as spares.\u00a0 This is good planning on the Commonwealth&#8217;s part.<\/p>\n<p>The program is planned to begin in <strong>March<\/strong> and will continue until the money is exhausted.\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #8b0000;\">That could be as little as one month.<\/span><\/strong> For those interested in handicapping the likely amount of time to take advantage of these rebates,\u00a0 consider the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rebates on larger appliances are <em>typically<\/em> $50 &#8211; $200.\u00a0 Assuming an average rebate of $125 (final numbers are not yet set &#8211; this is just to make an estimate), there would be in the ballpark of\u00a0 <strong>50,000 rebates<\/strong> available.<\/li>\n<li>About <strong>23.2 million<\/strong> refrigerators, freezers, washers, dishwashers were shipped for\u00a0 sale in the US in 2009 (rough estimate based on figures from Appliance, a trade magazine).<\/li>\n<li>Assuming Massachusetts residents buy a proportional share of those (probably a low estimate, since Massachusetts has a high per capita income),\u00a0 Massachusetts residents would typically buy about <strong>39,000 <\/strong>such appliances in an average month.<\/li>\n<li>With rebates giving sales an extra boost, 50,000 rebates could be gone in a month.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Alternately, there are about <strong>2.5 million households<\/strong> in the state.
